Very well stated. I like how you have provided some quite practical tips to build the virtual team. Back when I managed large corporate teams we used every one of your techniques (minus the web cam -- were not as prevalent then) and it made a significant positive difference in our effectiveness and general joy on the job. At a time where my peers were asking to not have virtual staff, we were thriving and bringing on more associates with "alternate work patterns."

Thank you for your comments and relating your experience. You were certainly ahead of the curve and were obviously doing things right.

Even as virtual meeting capabilities have improved dramatically in recent years, there are still those who resist using distributed teams. It's unfortunate because, as you point out, they can make a "significant positive difference in our effectiveness and general joy on the job".

In the majority of cases, those who use them experience very positive results. In the cases where issues arise, the reasons are obvious. It's always capable leadership that makes the difference.
